Embellish a Fiesta Birthday Card!

We’ve got birthdays on the brain around here in May. 28 Lilac Lane designer May Flaum was inspired to make her celebration a fiesta, with a card that features a watercolor pinata and a shower of 28 Lilac Lane embellishments!

Fiesta Birthday Card

Wondering what supplies May used? Here’s a look at her list:

This fiesta birthday card by May is so fun and easy to make – for the complete how to, check out her video tutorial below!

Did you notice that something was missing from the video? Here’s May’s explanation for that step that you don’t see in the video…

I did add the pink splatter you see here after filming. Intentional? Not quite… I was cleaning up spilled a bit then said oh to heck with it and went wild! Just a reminder you can always make it work.

Yes, even the fabulous May Flaum has crafting accidents! But as she proves with this cute fiesta birthday card, you can go from “whoops” to wonderful if you just are flexible and think creatively.

Fiesta birthday card close-up

This fiesta birthday card uses the pink and orange tones of the “Fruity Fun” embellishment bottle. But with a change of background cardstock and by using different colors of watercolors, you could make this design work with almost any of the 28 Lilac Lane embellishment bottles. How about the pink and green of Savannah Stroll, or the red, turquoise blue and green of the appropriately named Fiesta? Pick your favorite colors and make May’s fiesta birthday card your own!

Create a Decor Birdhouse with 28 Lilac Lane

One of my favorite DIY décor projects is to take a simple little wooden birdhouse and add buttons, sequins, and more to it. Today I’ve got a tutorial featuring one of my new jars and a kit that coordinates nicely with it. I loved having multiple colors of buttons, pearls, sequins, and beads to choose from as I created this project.

  • small wood birdhouse
  • white paint
  • liquid adhesive (PPA is what I recommend) and double sided tape/adhesive sheet
  • 28 Lilac Lane by Buttons Galore Attic Findings embellishment kit
  • 28 Lilac Lane by Buttons Galore Birds of a Feather embellishment jar
  • Optional: stamp, ink, glossy liquid sealant, and glitter glue

Here’s a look at the finished projectt!

Mixed Media Necklace

I created a mixed media necklace to share with you today. Mixed media to me means having fun. It’s more about the journey, and not so much about the results.

I like to incorporate elements that have meaning to me, or to the person I’m creating for. I love butterflies. They are all about change.

Note – this is what I used – use what YOU love. But of course, include some fun buttons! You don’t need everything on this list – you could play with paint, beads, remake an old necklace… The sky is the limit. Enjoy the journey!

  • buttons – Shop by color at Buttons Galore
  • chain and jump rings (Fire Mountain Gems)
  • shrinky dinks
  • napkin
  • dies (Spellbinders)
  • craft metal (Ten Seconds Studio)
  • glitter and liquid adhesive (Art Glitter)
  • copic markers and an ABS (air brushing system)

Here’s a fun little video showing some close ups and tips.

Thanks for joining me today. Please share something you make with buttons, I’d LOVE to see it.

You can find me at My Card Party.
