Between all my kids, the house is always filled with someone’s clothes that don’t fit anymore. With hand-me-downs, the boys have had a great selection of new clothes in every size, but my daughter isn’t about to get excited over monster truck t-shirts unless that have bling in sparkly pink and purple. However, with a little creativity, we can turn any rough, tough boy-wear to fabulous girly in no time!

Using dye and a pre-worn, long-sleeved white t-shirt, I created this fun button skirt. I chose a shirt that had quite a bit of blank/non-printed fabric, but you could create this same skirt style using a printed fabric for extra funky fun. Although I stuck with the princess type colors, you can use any color set you’d like. With this project I used buttons from the Sherbet Button Bonanza pack, here’s how:

Supplies you’ll need

  • Button Bonanza in Sherbet
  • Long-sleeved T-shirt
  • Rit fabric dye – Teal, Fuchsia, Aquamarine, Voilet (optional)
  • Coordinating embroidery thread – Blue, Hot Pink, Voilet
  • 1/2″ Elastic
  • Scissors, embroidery needle

How to make a T-shirt button skirt

  1. Cut off the bottom of the T-shirt leaving enough extra fabric to create a seam at the top for the waistband. Cut sleeves and remaining shirt fabric into 1″ wide strips, as long as possible.
  2. If desired, dye all fabric, wash and let dry.
  3. Stitch various fabric strips in place using embroidery thread. Not all edges need to be stitched down, the t-shirt fabric will add a fun curling effect if left un-attached.
  4. Place and secure buttons as desired, again using embroidery thread.
  5. Fold top of skirt piece over, with seams outside. Stitch leaving a 3/4″ channel. Leave a small, un-stitched opening. Pull elastic through channel, secure.

Oh, me, oh MY! What a super delish, WONDERFUL “green” way to get busy with buttons – and WHAT lil’ princess wouldn’t be HONORED to wear this darling, twirly, whirly buttoned up masterpiece! Super ideas and photos! Will definitely be looking at the “old t-shirt” pile with new eyes!
